Can we take advantage of salt’s abundance to generate new materials and a new economy ?

As a core element of the local ecosystem, salt is a staple of the Arlesian landscape. Its abundance makes it an important export product, but also offers opportunities to rethink the traditional ways in which it is used. The Salt Crystals project develops techniques to apply salt elements in design and architecture, exploring the material properties of salt in techniques such as 3D printing, pressing, and crystallization.

This project explores salt issues as they manifest themselves in the Camargue region, and involves designers, scientists and local experts, discussing the challenges ahead and exploring possible solutions. The outcomes of their work – a cabinet of curiosities of sorts – will be the starting point of future conversations, prototypes for future uses of salt in unexpected, uncommon contexts.
