Can one combine landscape planning with the preservation of natural vegetation ?

Creating man-made pathways in a natural environment is a major challenge in geological, physical and ecological terms. The Rooting project contemplates a new model of pathways that respects the natural aesthetics and surrounding vegetation. The research team intends to create a work that adapts to the environment’s features while complying with current standards.

Consideration is given to both the end product and the means to produce it. 3D printing, which can address multiple technical constraints, can perfectly accommodate the honeycomb structure imagined by the designers. Meanwhile, the KUKA robotic arm is used as a prototyping platform and represents a research focus for our designers, engineers and landscape architect.

In addition, this study paves the way for the production of a “degradable earthy concrete” that can be used to shape the landscape and also to feed the vegetation as it decomposes. Made of ecological and nutrient-rich material, this concrete will take part in the growth of the existing vegetal, animal and fungal worlds.
