Can we use design to bridge the worlds of culture, science and the industry?

Researching new values for local wetlands as incubators for locally grown bio-materials, the project explores the potential of growing micro- and macro-algae locally. These algae are then converted into biopolymers that can replace non-biodegradable, fossil oil-based plastics and simultaneously absorb carbon dioxide emissions. Currently, the bio-laboratory is working on a series of objects related to the region’s culture and history. Once produced, they should serve the needs of LUMA’s activities and visitors , who will be able to experience the circular production chain from raw material to final product.

The lab proposes a new model for circular production through biofabrication and decentralized fabrication such as 3D printing, by studying the use of a variety of this local renewable resources, from cultivating living micro-organisms sourced from the Camargue area to connecting to local algae farmers and institutes. The bio-laboratory will also promote bio-design training programs in collaboration with local and international institutes.
