About atelier LUMA
Embedded within the local ecology shared between the city of Arles and the Camargue region, atelier LUMA encourages environmentally conscious behaviour. It promotes circular economic practices that foster research and development, fully engaged with nature and community. Simultaneously, atelier LUMA co-develops new ways of producing and caring for a bioregion, using design as a tool for transition. The inherent mission of the program is to map a community, a city and a region as potential production worksites, and to consider them as resources for ideas and collective intelligence.
Since its foundation in 2016, atelier LUMA conducts projects connected to six strategic themes:.
Projects are developed by multidisciplinary teams that combine both local and international, existing and new knowledges and practices, and respond to the territory by tapping onto the region’s existing resources and dormant potential. Together, they discover, study, archive and share the rich cultural and biological resources of Arles and its surroundings, using them as tools to develop resilient and sustainable initiatives. atelier LUMA’s projects present local solutions for global issues, and strive to rethink a whole region.
The work of atelier LUMA can be consulted both online, in this repository, and on-site at the Parc des Ateliers, LUMA Arles. In 2017, atelier LUMA opens its doors to the public for the first time, during the inaugural edition of LUMA days in May 2017.
